Hurricane Tyra Black captured the Girls’ 12s title at the 2013 Junior Orange Bowl International Tennis Championship, on Dec. 23 turning around a difficult start to defeat No. 1-seeded Russian Anastasiya Potapova 0-6, 6-2, 6-4.
“She came out with a lot of confidence, and I didn’t come out with that much confidence,” Black said. “Then as the match went on, I started thinking I could do this.”
Black’s marathon triumph, played out over 2 hours, 43 minutes, added to a family legacy that now includes two Junior Orange Bowl champions and a runner-up. Half-sister Nicole Pitts won the Girls 14s title in 2000; sister Tornado Alicia Black fell short in upper division two years ago, losing to fellow Floridian Katerina Stewart.
