Canadian Francoise Abanda (Montreal) captured her first career professional-level title at the Tevlin Challenger on Friday, as she and American partner Victoria Duval saved two match points to win the $50K ITF Pro Circuit event’s doubles crown at Rexall Centre.
Sixteen-year-old Abanda and 17-year-old Duval, an unseeded duo who finished as runners-up at last week’s $50K Saguenay National Bank Challenger in Quebec, defeated the No. 2-seeded pair of Melanie Oudin and Jessica Pegula of the United States 7-6(5), 2-6, 11-9. After splitting the first two sets, an exciting match tiebreak ensued, which saw Abanda and Duval come back from 8-2 down to secure the triumph.
“It feels really good to win my first title, and especially to do it at a $50K in Canada and come back like we did in the tiebreaker,” Abanda said. “It was a fun match, and I’m really happy to win with Vicky, I think we make a good team.”
