Days after sending out wedding invitations, Scottish pro golfer Rory McIlroy, 25, has canceled his upcoming nuptials to Danish tennis star Caroline Wozniacki, 23, and is taking all the blame.
“There is no right way to end a relationship that has been so important to two people,” the golfer says in a statement. “The problem is mine. The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realize that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails.”
The couple had dated for three years and had announced their engagement on New Year’s via Twitter.
“I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we’ve had. I will not be saying anything more about our relationship in any setting.”
But then he did. In an uncomfortable question-and-answer session at the BMW PGA Championship in England, he added that the split was “mutual and amicable,” but that it was “obviously quite a difficult time for Caroline and myself,” the New York Times reports.
