There is little debate about the most coveted shot in women’s tennis: Serena Williams‘ serve.

At 5-9, Serena Williams is shorter than many big servers. But she more than makes up for it with her explosive leg strength, which is the source of her 120-mph-plus first-serve power.

The 30-year-old American has ridden her wicked delivery to 14 major champiosnhips, most recently at Wimbledon, where she blasted an All England Club-record 102 aces in seven matches that included a record-tying 24 in her semifinal defeat of Victoria Azarenka.

Scarier still? Williams’ serve appears to be improving with age.

“The older I get, the better I serve,” she said this summer, not long after describing her serve as “mean.”

Her father, Richard, traces its origin to teaching Williams to throw like a boy as a child. Her mother, Oracene Price, said Williams tried to emulate Pete Sampras and it had always been a natural shot that she and her former husband knew better than to mess with.
