Serena Williams has entered her name on the entry list for the 2014 BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells scheduled for March 6-16, 2014. Venus and Serena have boycotted the event since 2001.
In 2001, Venus Williams withdrew from her semi-final match against Serena 4 minutes prior to the event start time. Serena entered the stadium for her semi-final match against Kim Clijsters to unceremonious boos and jeers. The boos and jeers continued throughout the match as well as during Serena’s winners speech.
I admired Serena when she withdrew form the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, SC in 2000 due to the state’s resistance to removing the Confederate battle flag from the Statehouse.
I for one, wish that the sisters never return to Indian Wells, but I digress as I’m sure that there are some major benefits on the table if they agree to return. Serena is weakly citing having been inspired toward returning after watching a movie about the late South African leader Nelson Mandela. I’M NOT BUYING IT!!
